Chiropractic-like treatments (manipulation of the spine, extremity bones and soft tissues) is as old as recorded history of health care. These manipulations along with acupuncture and herbology are the foundations of Chinese medicine. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used forms of manipulations.
History of Chiropractic
"Chiropractic" is a word coined in late 1980's by a gentleman observing a treatment rendered by a D.D. Palmer who adjusted a janitor's cervical spine and returned his hearing. This is a historical fact. D.D. Palmer started the first "Chiropractic" school in Davenport, Iowa.
At the exact same time Andrew Still began the first "Osteopathic" school in Kirksville, Missouri. D.D. Palmer believed that the nervous system was the master controlling system in the body and manipulations were performed to restore proper nervous system function. Andrew Still believed that the circulatory system was the master controlling system and that manipulations helped to restore proper circulation in the body to restore normal function.
Waldo Rehabilitation, Health and Wellness. Chiropractic treatment for the Kansas City area
Today, there are many chiropractic techniques available today that include not only standard manipulations but include many light force or minimal force techniques. Most of the procedures done at our clinic involve light force and acupuncture-like techniques that re-establish normal muscle balance/tone for restoration of structural balance/function. Many people are afraid of chiropractic because they think it will hurt. There are procedures that are painless and extremely effective. We cater to chickens! |
